When I pick a control point in the surveys tab the photo that is selected is unselected and I'm returned to the beginning of the list. This was not the case in previous versions. The selected photo needs to remain selected, because that is where I wanted to place my control point target!

this has been fixed. Current releases don't show this behavior.
FYI, to speed up the process if needed, you have a setting to automatically move to the next photo in the list.
